Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death among both men and women in the United States. It is also the most common type of heart disease. Lifestyle changes, various medications, and or medical procedures are capable of treating or preventing coronary artery disease in most people.

This heart disease is characterized by plaque which builds up inside the coronary arteries. This prevents an adequate amount of blood from getting to the heart as the coronary arteries supply the heart with oxygenated blood.

The plaque which builds up in the arteries is composed of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and a variety of other substances found in the blood. When this plaque builds up in the arteries, the condition is called atherosclerosis. As plaque narrows the arteries, oxygenated blood can’t reach the heart muscles. This can cause angina or a heart attack.

Angina is chest pain or general discomfort that occurs when not enough oxygenated blood reaches the heart. Angina may feel like pressure or a squeezing in the chest. The pain can also extend to the shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back.

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to an area of the heart is completely blocked by a blood clot, plaque, or other body. This completely prevents oxygenated blood from reaching that region of the heart and causes it to die. If a person does not receive quick treatment, a heart attack can lead to serious problems and death.

With time, coronary artery disease weakens the heart muscle and can lead to congestive heart failure or arrhythmias. Congestive heart failure is a condition where the heart can’t pump enough blood through the body. Arrhythmias are problems with the speed or rhythm of the heart. These are typically treated through defibrillators or pacemakers.
