Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency has recently been identified as a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. The recent study was published this year and was conducted by a group from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The findings could have a broad public health implication given the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in developed countries.
Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in the United States and globally. It can affect as many as a third to a half of otherwise healthy middle-aged to elderly adults. The principle causes of low vitamin D levels are limited cutaneous synthesis due to inadequate sun exposure or pigmented skin and inadequate dietary intake.
The majority of symptoms of vitamin D deficiency involve and relate to the musculoskeletal system. While this is true, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that low levels of vitamin D have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system.
The receptors for Vitamin D have a distribution among many types of tissues, including vascular smooth muscle, endothelium, and cardiomycytes. There are higher rates of coronary heart disease and hypertension the further from the equator a population lives. This has been attributed to the higher prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency in regions that get less exposure to sunlight.
The doctors who authored the latest data caution that prospective data is needed because vitamin D deficiency could actually be a consequence of cardiovascular disease as opposed to a cause. Either way, vitamin D deficiency is linked to cardiovascular disease.
