Garlic and Heart Health

The heart is constantly under attack from the fatty foods we eat. They cause plaque which obstructs arteries and can lead to heart attacks and death. Fortunately, nature created garlic. Garlic contains powerful antioxidants which prevent oxidation. Oxidation is a harmful process in the body. One of the antioxidants contained in garlic is selenium. Selenium is a mineral that is a powerful antioxidant that the body produces to defend itself. It works with vitamin E to form a super-antioxidant defense system.

Other antioxidants found in garlic include vitamin C. It helps to reduce the damage that LDL cholesterol can cause to the heart. Manganese is also found in garlic. Manganese is an important component of a different antioxidant.

Oxidation is tied to oxygen. While oxygen is good for the cells in general, it can also be harmful. When the cells break down glucose for energy, free radicals are released. These free radicals start oxidizing and damaging cellular tissues. It is the equivalent of the bloodstream and blood vessels rusting out.

Antioxidants, however, destroy free radicals, including those that are products of the environment. These include free radicals produced by:

• Air pollutants
• Cigarette smoke
• Rancid oils
• Pesticides

The body keeps a supply of antioxidants ready to neutralize free radicals, but can sometimes be overwhelmed.

When oxidation occurs in the arteries, the body attempts to mend the damage with a spackle-like substance. This substance, unfortunately, attracts cholesterol and other debris that build up within the arteries. This creates progressive plaque formation.
